Gains For US & Gains for India from N-Deal

WHAT INDIA STANDS TO GAIN FROM N-DEAL

India can have the advantage of cooperation with the nuclear states including US without placing its military facilities under safeguard.

India does not need to sign the Non Proliferation Treaty.

India will have access to diverse energy sources and it will not have to depend on just one nation as it was in the past.

IT, space, defense, medicine will all receive boost up with such close cooperation with the P5s or the five nuclear nations.

The agreement will not hinder or interfere with India’s nuclear programmed for military purposes.

India’s nuclear weapons will not be disturbed and it will be allowed to possess them.

India will get recognition as a nation with advanced nuclear technology.

India need not fear as the deal will not be offered to Pakistan.

Washington will support New Delhi develop strategic reserves of nuclear fuel to guard against future disruption of supply.

In case of disruption, WE and India will jointly convene a group of friendly supplier countries to include nations like Russia, France and the UK to pursue such measures to restore fuel supply.

WHAT US STANDS TO GAIN FROM N-DEAL

What US stand to gain?

In the post cold war era a fast developing nation like India can serve as a US ally in South East Asia.

The much rattled US after the 9/11 shock might see India in future as a safe base in Asia in its fight against terrorism.

US firms can now partner Indian counterparts in high tech ventures, which they were not supposed to do up till now.

It is also seen as a result of the changed policy of US towards India since 1998. It may be described as yet another step after space cooperation, joint military operations and easing restrictions on the dual use of technology.

The growing energy demands of fast developing economies like India and China have raised questions on the impact of global energy availability. The Bush Administration has realized that the shift of India towards nuclear energy is in the best interest for US to secure its energy needs of coal, crude oil, and natural gas. Moreover, India's strong non-proliferation record and stable democracy further helped justify a nuclear pact with India while not providing Pakistan or others the same

What is 123?

The 123 Act may be described as a bilateral pact between the US and India under which the US will provide access to civilian nuclear technology and nuclear fuel to India in exchange for IAEA-safeguards on civilian Indian reactors. The deal was negotiated during President Bush’s visit to India in July 2005.

The 123 agreement gives India the same status as the P-5 nations, by recognizing its civil and nuclear capabilities. The agreement is valid for 40 years and can be terminated by either side by giving a notice of one year.

Why it is called 123?

The name “123 Act” has been derived from Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act under which US can enter into any bilateral civil nuclear cooperation agreement
